Strategy: Tight-Passive Players
March 1st, 2010Tight-passive online poker players don’t like risks. They don’t like to bet unless they’re certain to win, and they usually fold when faced with any bet (unless they’ve got the nuts). I used to dislike playing against these online poker guys, because I could never get them to stay in a poker online hand when I had good cards. Any time I’d raise they’d get out like the building was on fire. And it’s true that when they have the option, tight-passive players are prone to folding rather than calling or reraising your bet, but the great thing is that they don’t always have the option to back out. At least once per rotation, a tight-passive player has to pay the big and small blinds, and that’s when these guys become profitable to play against. Tight-passive players are extremely susceptible to raising on the blinds, because of their tendency to fold. They’re a great resource for padding your stack when the cards aren’t going your way, because they’re usually a safe bet (no pun intended) when you want to make a grab for their blinds. Even if they do find a great starting hand, you’re not risking a lot with a bluff, because if they call or even raise, you can put them on a good hand and play the flop accordingly.
